Co-op: Your Competitive Advantage
Imagine...
Being a part of the marketing team working on the creation of a national TV advertising campaign...Implementing new engineering processes for an international car manufacturer...Working side by side with business executives and partners across North America.
No need to imagine. This is the type of valuable work experience Lakehead University students receive through the co-operative education program.
As a co-op student at Lakehead, you will integrate your academic study with practical, hands-on work experience while earning a competitive salary. That's right! In university, you get paid by the employer you are working for during your co-op placement.
At Lakehead University, we offer the co-op option in the following programs: Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Forestry, Kinesiology, Math and Physics.
Typical co-op programs will see you gain anywhere from 12 to 16 months of work experience throughout your program, with placements ranging from 4 to 12 months in length at a time.
In many ways, co-op is similar to looking for a job. You have to apply and compete for your co-op position. In the end, your placement may be local, national or even international depending on where you successfully get hired. In the past, Lakehead students have worked at global companies including IBM, Research in Motion (RIM), Shell, Telus Mobility, Bowater, Honda and CIBC to name a few.
As you can see, through co-op, you can discover first hand the relevance of what you are learning in the classroom and how it applies to the working world. Plus, you gain a competitive advantage by building your resume so that upon graduation you have an edge over the rest of the pack.
